Wep doesn't work with atheros 5212

Hi again

From day to day I'm more confused.
I've now tried to setup WEP with wpa_supplicant-0.3.9-rc1 and
wpa_supplicant-0.4.1
Both don't work i.e. I cannot ping my ap.
Ap is a wrt54g. With ndsiwrapper and WPC54g it works with wpa_supplicant
and atheros card
it down't work BUT if I do it myself i.e.

  iwconfig $NIF key <key>
  ifconfig $NIF down
  iwconfig $NIF enc on
  ifconfig $NIF up
everything works fine.
WPA-PSK seems to work with wpa_supplicant-0.4.1 ...
I'm realy at the end of my know how.
I don't need wep but I think there is a general problem if such a basic
thing
doesn't work from release to release.
I have not problem to be a tester for my cards in fact I would like it,
but I need some more
background info so let me know if you use more tester before releasing ...

Where is the problem. Does wep use openssl? Does wpa_supplicant use
own algo for wep and if I do it by hand i.e. madwifi use other algo?
If I do a iwconfig ath0 in both cases it's exactly the same output.
netstat -rn also.

Any help is realy nice.

BTW: I use madwifi-bsd branch from today (20050530) vanilla kernel-2.4.30
wireless tools v26 or v27, wireless extension v16 of kernel and ath0
suse9.0 (with kernel-2.4.30) openssl-0.9.7b-68 of suse.
