linux/*.ver problem during compilation of hostap 0.2.1 on RH 9

I am using a custom kernel on RH 9.

I am getting the following error in compilation of the hostap driver
(for later use with Freeradius and xsupplicant) :

[root at sggs hostap-driver-0.2.1]# make install_pci
Makefile:38: WARNING: No kernel PCMCIA support found and PCMCIA_PATH is
not defined
gcc -O2 -D__KERNEL__ -DMODULE -Wall -g -c -DMODVERSIONS -include
/usr/src/linux-2.4.20/include/linux/modversions.h -fomit-frame-pointer
-c -o driver/modules/hostap_crypt_wep.o driver/modules/hostap_crypt_wep.c
In file included from <command line>:1:

No such file or directory
linux/modules/ac97_codec.ver: No such file or directory
No such file or directory
linux/modules/aci.ver: No such file or directory

I have seen references to this error on RH 9 for earlier hostap versions
with the suggestion that it was fixed in CVS :

This link is a year old, and I find it hard to believe that this
would not have been fixed in the main line branch of the development. I
am using the latest stable version - 0.2.1.
