Generally, the vendors are too lazy to bother with updates unless it
fixes specific problems their larger customers are complaining about.

Intersil has current updates for every production chipset. Going all
the way back to the earliest prism2 days. For example, 1.5.6 is
available for prism2, but the newest you'll find on most vendor's sites
is 0.8.3, if they bother at all.

Of course, it's not that the vendors are necessarily lazy -- they have
to properly validate the firmware release on their hardware and driver
combination, and that takes time and costs money. It may also require
PDA updates, but fortunately Intersil has been good lately about
providing sane defaults for missing records.

Generally, newer is better, but this isn't always the case..
