As for scanning ports to see what is open/closed, nmap is the command you would most likely use. Or, even simpler, you can just attempt to telnet to the port and see if it (the connection) is refused.

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone knew of commands within Red Hat and Solaris that
you could manually shutdown and open up ports. Also, is there utilities
that I can scan the ports to verify which ones are open and which ones are
closed?

Thankyou for all of your help in the past!
