[vpn] VPN connection does not allow access to sql database

I can take a guess at this one. 
 
You probably need to refer to your sql server by its fully qualified
name, i.e. sqlserver.yourorg.com, not just as sqlserver, which you would
get away with if you were working on the LAN.

If it's not that - give a bit more detail - are you using TCP/IP?  
How are you trying to connect?
