Yes, it is an arbitrary convention. Call one gateway "right", the other
"left". The subnets behind them are then "leftsubnet" and "rightsubnet".

Smoothwall use the FreeS/WAN Linux implementation of IPsec, so you
might find FreeS/WAN documentation helpful.
