PPTP problem

This may be a bit off topic, but I am grasping at straws.

I have a friend with a laptop using Windows 2000 Server, service pack
1.  He connects via PPTP to another Windows box (several, actually) running
Windows 2000 Server (the others use Windows NT Server 4.0).  When he closes
his connection, his TCP/IP stack disappears.  He cannot even "ping
127.0.0.1".  The same happens when he closes a dial-up connection to an ISP.

I know another fellow that is suffering the same problem.  I tried to
reinstall SP1, but that did not fix it.

Has anyone seen this?  Does anyone know of a fix?
