Oh really? How strange - folks were using swIPe and IPSEC long before IKE, 
and shared secret worked just fine (assuming you securely shared the 
secret, and I know swIPe had some issues with insertion attacks). IKE is an 
abysmal protocol designed by committee, and it shows.
