Stress test

What kind of tools are people using to stress test VPN/firewalls. There
are a lot of packet generators (smartbits/ixia) out there but no one seems
to be able to simulate stateful connections and get some substantial
amount of data flowing through the connections... Are there any tools
hardware/linux/solaris that anyone know about.... I've heard of Antara.
what else is out there?
