NIC or Modem

Assuming you are using a Windows client at home and using a PPTP connection
for your VPN (you gave *no details*)... Then you should be able to map a
drive with no problem (assuming you can actually access the drive via the
VPN). Check to make sure that you are mapping the drive properly. For NT
networks you can only map the root of the drive, unless you upgrade you
cannot map to a sub-folder.

As to how it determines which resource to use... It depends on the protocol
you are passing through the VPN (again, *no details* so you get only guesses
here). If you are using IP then the routing tables have an interface
associated with certain routes. In Windows, open a DOS box and type in
'route print' to see the routing tables.

The table should start with an interface list:
   1 is normally a loopback,
2 is normally your first network card, then
3 is normally a dialup or vpn adapter.
If you have two network cards then 3 will normally be the second network
card and 4 will be a dialup or vpn adapter.

The next part printed out should be a more typical routing table. One of
the headers will be "Interface". You will see an IP address in this column.
The IP address is the IP address of the interface to use for this route. To
see which IP address is associated with which interface, use 'Winipcfg' in
Win9x and use 'ipconfig /all' in WinNT.

Unix operates in a similar manner. The router table is used to determine
which interface is used to reach a specific destination.

If you want more detailed help, send a more detailed question.

Subject: NIC or Modem

I have a LAN at home. I have a modem in my PC. When I connect to my ISP,
and then establish the VPN Tunnel, I am not able to map a drive via the VPN.
My question: how does the computer know whether to send the mapping request
down the NIC path or the Modem path? This also applies to machines with
multiple NIC's, how does the computer determine which resource gets the
request?
