VPN Connection

Being relatively new to VPNs, i dont think i can point you at a VPN
specific fix for this, but it sounds more like a normal WAN problem - it
may be nothing to do with the VPN.

This sounds like "classic" windows trouble to do with finding a WINS
server - same issue often occurs on WANs with small offices without
local servers connect to larger sites.

You sometimes get related problems where you can get to specific servers
by name, but browsing of some or all domains doesnt work.

there are 2 standard fixes for this:

1. set up NetBIOS over IP forwarding on the router (your VPN gear may
not understand what this means).
2. configure the PCs with static WINs server addresses.

Thanks to everyone for the advice on Linux. We will be looking at
FreeS/WAN as a possibility.

Also, I have VPN set up under NT on one server, and client set up on
95 and 98 machines. It logs into the remote network just fine, but when
I try to browse the network it shows no computers available. Login was
validated successfully. All other network info on the LAN is available.
Everything looks fine from each end, but nothing shows up through the
VPN connection. Any ideas? (This will NOT be our permanent VPN
connection as I know about the MS flaws).
