Yes, probably space vica tab mangling. At the beginning of Makefile lines (and 
"rules" is just a makefile) there should always be a tab, not spaces.

Use emacs and M-x whitespace-mode, for example.


Also, use "export LANG=C" when you post error message output to international 
mailing lists. Not everyone here understands ""Fehlschlag" or "Fehler 
Exitstatus".
