best setup?

Would you be able to test this with 2.6.32 kernel or at least with
wireless parts from 2.6.32 with compat-wireless? Which version of
hostapd are you using? I would suggest using 0.7.0 or the latest
snapshot from the development tree.

Which card (vendor/model) are you using with ath9k?

Could you please provide more details on why you have to restart
hostapd?
