Any modern chipsets supported by hostapd on Linux?

As far as I know, MadWifi supports all Atheros devices with chips
starting with "ar5" except ar5311 (old pre-802.11n MIMO cards).  It's
only ar9xxx devices that are not supported by MadWifi.

Also, the nl80211 driver supports mac80211 based drivers, such as ath9k
and b43.  This is a new code, so you'll need to use the latest
development release of hostapd or the version from git.  Using the
wireless-testing branch of the kernel could be useful too.
