ioctl[SIOCSIWAUTH]: Operation not supported

I ran 0.4.9 on Slackware 11 and everything worked like  a charm.  After I
upgraded to Slackware 12.0 and the version got bumped up to 0.5.7, I'm
getting the following error on the start-up:

root at alkos333_TPT60:/var/run# !wpa_supplicant
wpa_supplicant -B -i wlan0 -D wext -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
ioctl[SIOCSIWAUTH]: Operation not supported
WEXT auth param 4 value 0x0 - ioctl[SIOCSIWAUTH]: Operation not supported



I ran it with a -dd option, so here is a more detailed output:
