Can hostapd be a pure authentication server?

Hell, every one.

I am trying to set up a pure authentication server on linux SUSE using 
hostapd-0.5.8.
But I don't know how to confige the hostapd.conf and .config to make the 
server be a pure authentication server.

Can hostapd be a pure server?
What configuration I must set to make it?

I have worked on this for more than a week but don't have any idea.
Please help me figure out.
