Madwifi/wpa_supplicant connection to WPA-PEAP on hidden SSID help needed

Hi

I'm having either a Madwifi or wpa_supplicant or both problem, when
trying to establish a WPA-PEAP based connection.


My setup is as follows:

Laptop running Ubuntu Feisty, kernel 2.6.20-16.
The Wi-Fi card is a Cisco A/B/G card, AIR-CB21AG-E-K9
The Madwifi driver according to the Ubuntu package and is version 0.9.3
but the kernel message seems to disagree.
The version of wpa_supplicant is 0.6.0 compiled from source.
I tried wpa_supplicant version 0.5.5 from the Ubuntu package but that
seemed worse

I'm connecting to the following:
The APs are Cisco 3201BG Lightweight AP configured by LWAPP
The service is protected by WPA-PEAP and uses a hidden ssid.
The authentication is password based, no certificates.

There are 3 APs in my vicinity I can connect via, they have BSSID/MACs:

00:18:ba:b6:e6:31
00:18:ba:b6:94:01
00:18:ba:b6:fb:01 - closest, so should be best bet.

The wpa_supplicant config file appears:

ap_scan=1

Using wpa_supplicant version 0.5.5 I was very intermittently able to
connect.  Suspecting a problem with this version I've switched to
version 0.6.0 which compiled from source.

I can connect to the APs under Windows XP without issue.  It is under
Linux where I get the problems.  Prior to capturing these logs, I was in
Windows and connected up ok.  I then rebooted the machine over to Linux.
The first connection was successful.  I was able to get a DHCP IP and
access the network.  I ended wpa_supplicant via ctrl+c.  The second
attempt was also successful.  I ended wpa_supplicant via ctrl+c, then
removed and re-seated the PCMCIA card.  I then had 4 failed runs of
wpa_supplicant, each ended with a ctrl+c.  The 5th attempt was
successful.

Can anyone make sense of what is going on?  Lots of logs attached for
those with an interest.
