wpa_supplicant's own certificate validation function

Hi,

In function tls_connection_ca_cert(). there is function to OpenSSL
library -
SSL_set_verify(conn->ssl, SSL_VERIFY_PEER, tls_verify_cb);

Since here the wpa_supplicant defines its own callback function  -
tls_verify_cb, to verify certificate, does that mean wpa_supplicant does
not use the OpenSSL library to verify certificates? What the benefit and
draw of using wpa_supplicant's own funcion to verify certificate?
