	You are using kernel 2.4.X. I don't know how well all those
new driver and wpa_supplicant work in 2.4.X. And to upgrade to 2.6.X,
you need a few extra package (like module stuff).
	Note also that you may still be able to use the 'madwifi'
specific driver in wpa_supplicant with WE<18, it's worth a try...
