I've been trying to work on it for a few time, but it's a long way.
There are two distinct problems, first one is merging both state machines
(as jouni said) into one application, second is forcing the interface
(that should be working in ad-hoc mode) to behave like a master/managed
interface. I'm now working on the first issue, I'm trying to port eapol
state machine and wpa supplicant SM into hostapd.
Once state machines are ported and do compile I want to try to have WPA
over WDS. This is because it looks easier as a middle step and can give a
ad-hoc like topology like the one used in project Locust.
Another difficulty to overcome is that when a card is put in ad-hoc mode
it takes a random BSSID, and there is no standard way (confined to level
II) to have a list of neighbours (to my understanding of 802.11 protocol).
that is: scanning is in terms of cells, so it returns a list of bssid, but
in ad-hoc mode bssid != mac address. so if you want to have an ad-hoc
network without fixed topology you should face this issue.
