You can also look into the initng project which is a replacement init
and script system. I don't think it supports Slackware as it's Gentoo
based, but I wrote the network scripts for it - and Gentoo. It should be
possible to separate the scripts from initng and just use them in Slack
with a little bit of work. Gentoo's are heavily built into baselayout,
but not so much with initng.
