unable to get madwifi driver built into wpa_supplicant

Hello All,

I ran through the instructions here:
http://madwifi.sourceforge.net/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=wpa_802.11i.  When I
attempt to run 'wpa_supplicant -Bw -d -Dmadwifi -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
-iath0', I receive the following:

"Initializing interface 'ath0 conf '/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf' driver
'madwifi'
No driver interfaces build into wpa_supplicant"

I have verified both the .config and Makefile entries as described in the
link above.  Am I missing something?  I have a feeling it is something small
that I am overlooking.
