scanning in hostap

hi guys;

i am using hostap-0.2.4,and want to scan for available networks.however everytime i get no scan
result.this is what i do:

[$root]iwlist wlan0 scan
wlan0    No scan results
-------------------------
i am sure there are many networks available however the scan returns with no result.does anyone know
of any tweaking i have to do,to get this working.
