802.1x with wpa_supplicant, ioctl[SIOCSIWFREQ]: Invalid argument

I've been playing aroud with wpa_supplicant as 802.1x client (no WPA),
but I cant get it to work against a hostap AP. It seems to me as if
there is some problem with setting the frequency: (parse from
wpa_supplicant with '-dd' argument)

Trying to associate with 00:02:6f:09:c5:1a (SSID='mw' freq=-19625 MHz)
wpa_driver_hostap_set_key: alg=none key_idx=0 set_tx=0 seq_len=0 key_len=0
wpa_driver_hostap_set_key: alg=none key_idx=1 set_tx=0 seq_len=0 key_len=0
wpa_driver_hostap_set_key: alg=none key_idx=2 set_tx=0 seq_len=0 key_len=0
wpa_driver_hostap_set_key: alg=none key_idx=3 set_tx=0 seq_len=0 key_len=0
wpa_driver_hostap_associate
ioctl[SIOCSIWFREQ]: Invalid argument

The frequency is negative. I am using cvs snapshot of hostap from
2004-03-08, both in the client and in the AP. I have configured
wpa_supplicant with 'scan_ssid=1', however, if I make that 'scan_ssid=0'
I get this error instead:

Starting AP scan (broadcast SSID)
EAPOL: Port Timers tick - authWhile=0 heldWhile=0 startWhen=0 idleWhile=0
Wireless event: cmd=0x8b19 len=12
Invalid freq in scan results (BSSID=00:02:6f:06:56:50: m=-1962606464 e=1
Invalid freq in scan results (BSSID=00:02:b3:04:e1:7a: m=-1962606528 e=1

Any idea what might cause this?

/Martin
