wep: iwconfig enc: "open" works, "shared" doesn't

Following Andrew Barr's instructions, I'm operational with the DWL-520 rev. E using Slackware 2.4.22 on an 815E-chip-based PC. I had to recompile the kernel to enable MOD_VERSIONS, which allowed successful makes of the hostap modules. (The modules hostap, hostap_pci, & hostap_crypt_wep load with no error messages.) I also installed wireless tools prior to making the new kernel, which allowed hostap_srec to load the firmware, although several message are generated in the process (see output below).

However, when I try to set <iwconfig enc shared> using A.B.'s rc.wlan script, I get an invalid argument message (in output). Either way, open or shared, I'm able to connect to my Apple Airport base station and obtain a functional IP address, even though the base station is configured for WEP encryption (and MAC-specific access).

My question is, what's going on? Is hostap bypassing the hardware security? Is the base station actually receiving the WEP info despite "shared" being turned off?
