one more piece of information...
 it is just DHCP that breaks in when the bridge is not in "clone mac
mode"

each dhcp request causes these messages in dmesg
AP: drop packet to non-associated STA 00:09:6b:5f:52:19
AP: drop packet to non-associated STA 00:09:6b:5f:52:19
AP: drop packet to non-associated STA 00:09:6b:5f:52:19


so maybe this is something simple ...
