can associate with master, but cannot ping or anything else

Hi,

this is without a doubt really basic, but can anyone please tell me why I can 
easily associate (managed mode on host 192.168.1.2) with my hostap access 
point (master mode on host 192.168.1.1), but I cannot establish any kind of 
communication between the two hosts at all. Not even ping.

/var/log/syslog outputs:
Jan 14 20:00:07 localhost kernel: wlan0: <MAC of 192.168.1.2> auth_cb - STA 
authenticated
Jan 14 20:00:07 localhost kernel: wlan0: <MAC of 192.168.1.2> assoc_cb - STA 
associated


192.168.1.2 routes anything destined to network 192.168.1.0 to gateway 
192.168.1.1 (my access point).

Access point (192.168.1.1) routing table:

Btw, is this line from the routing table all wrong? (maybe I misunderstand 
something about defining static routes between hosts):
192.168.1.2     192.168.1.1     255.255.255.255 UGH   0      0        0 wlan0
