iwconfig error

I had a lot of trouble installing hostAP, but finally got my wireless card
recognized and using lsmod see that the hostAP modules are loaded. Now when
I run iwconfig, I get this message:

Driver for device wlan0 has been compiled with version 14 of Wireless
Extension, while this program is using version 12. Some things may be
broken...

Even more so the problem is when I try to set things such as essid or mode i
get this error:

Error for wireless request "Set ESSID" : SET failed on device wlan0, Invalid
argument.

Are the two problems inter-related? Any ideas of fixes? I know most of you
might want to kill me for this, but since I wasnt sure which version of
hostAP to install I decided to [try] to install all of them (install pci,
pccard, plx)..could this add to the problem? Thanks in advance.

Also, if this helps, this is output from dmesg:
