Unable to set nwid/domain using iwconfig

Hello,
 
When I try to set the nwid/domain using: "iwconfig wlan0 nwid off" or
"iwconfig wlan0 nwid ab34" I get the following error:
 
Error for wireless request "Se NWID" (8B02) : 
    SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported.
 
 
I am using an LinkSys WPC11 pc card with firmware version 1.4.9.  Anybody
familiar with this problem?
