Actually, it's not OK for WDS.  Hostap uses non-standard WDS frames when
1.4.9 and older firmware is used, so it cannot talk to other access points
unless they run hostap as well.

Upgrade to firmware 1.5.6 or a later version.

It would be helpful is you quoted the exact error messages while
describing your problems.
